Bicycles East hosted a celebration of National Bike to Work Day. Cyclists gathered for social time and updates on local advocacy efforts. A guide led a group of cyclists into Hartford for the State's National Bike to Work Day celebration.

Bike Scavenger Hunt - October 16, 2016

We had our best turnout ever at this year's Bicycle Boulevard Scavenger Hunt. Bicycles East co-sponsored with the Town of Glastonbury and Bike Walk Glastonbury, in coordination with the Glastonbury Chamber of Commerce's Apple Harvest Festival. Over 70 people participated and had a great time. Here they wait for the announcement of the prizes, including a bicycle donated by Bicycles East. A great morning!

Discover Tour of Glastonbury - August 21, 2016

Bicycles East was a proud sponsor and provided technical support for the Discover Tour of Glastonbury. A great ride that supported 3 charities - Kiwanis Club, Bike Walk CT, and the Brain Injury Alliance.

May 26, 2016 - Letter to the Editor - Putnam Bridge Updates

There has been a lot of information communicated lately about the status of the bicycle and pedestrian access on the Putnam Bridge, and a lot of questions have resulted. Last week, the Glastonbury Citizen kindly published Deb's letter to the editor that states the facts as I know them. Deb serves on the State of CT Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee that regularly receives reports directly from DOT about this project. In addition, she served as the committee's representative on the Feasibility Study Group that examined the various options for access. You can read the letter here.

April 30, 2016 - Audubon Environmental Excellence Award

Bicycles East is so honored to have received the Environmental Excellence Award from the Audubon Center at Glastonbury. Deb received the award at the center's Earth Fair in recognition for our work for alternative transportation, bicycle safety, and respect for the environment. The Audubon does wonderful work for our community - we are truly touched by this recognition and we hope that you wll check out their programs.

April 15, 2016 - Bike Donation to Glastonbury Youth and Family Services

Bicycles East mechanics fixed up several bikes so that we could safely donate them to Glastonbury Youth and Family Services who will get them to children that they serve. Every child deserves a bike!

Jan. 27, 2016 - Helmet Donation

Bicycles East and Bike Walk Glastonbury teamed up with Glastonbury Youth and Family Services to provide and fit helmets to approximately 20 children and youth. We are honored to be included in this program, and feel great knowing that 20 more children will be safe when they ride their bikes in town.

Nov. 8, 2015 - Glastonbury River Runners Race to Fill the Pantry

Bicycles East once again sponsored the Glastonbury River Runners Race to Fill the Pantry. Steve led the race on bike, and Deb ran this time. Here she is crossing the finish line. We have been told that the race collected enough food to feel over 200 families! Great job River Runners!

October 18, 2015 - Bicycle Boulevard Scavenger Hunt - Glastonbury Apple Harvest Festival

Bicycles East once again teamed up with Glastonbury Parks and Recreation, Bike Walk Glastonbury, and the Glastonbury Chamber of Commerce to offer the Bicycle Boulevard Scavenger Hunt. Families rode the family-friendly roads of Glastonbury and earn chances to win prizes. Here is one happy winner receiving her prize at the Welcome Stage of the Glastonbury Apple Harvest Festival. A beautiful, fun morning for all involved!

October 8, 2015 - Cub Scout Pack Bike Safety Demo

Steve spent the evening at Nayaug School teaching the members of Cub Scout Pack 356 about bicycle safety. They are heading out for a bike trip this weekend, and now they are all prepared.

America's Best Bike Shop Award - August 31, 2015

The National Bicycle Dealer's Association once again named Bicycles East one of "America's Best Bicycle Shops." This year we were humbled to receive a perfect score - 620 out of 620 possible points in areas including customer service, community support and bicycle advocacy, and staff knowledge. Thank you to all of you for supporting us.

Advocacy Excellence Award - August 4, 2015

Bicycles East was one of 5 bicycle dealers nationwide to receive this "2015 Advocacy Excellence Award" at the Trek dealer show. The plaque reads "in recognition for all that you have done to create a bicycle friendly Glastonbury and a bicycle friendly America. Thank you for your outstanding leadership and commitment to advocacy. Signed, John Burke." We are humbled by the honor.

June 10, 2015 - Glastonbury Named Bicycle Friendly Community

Glastonbury is now officially a "Bicycle Friendly Community" as designated by the League of American Bicyclists. In November 2013, Bicycles East hosted the League's VP for a bike tour and meeting with town staff, officials, and advocates, and many people committed their time and efforts. We are proud of the acknowledgment of the work that we have all done and excited about the future activities and improvements that lie ahead.

MS Bike Tour - June 7, 2015

Steve provided tech support for the MS Bike Tour. Thank you to all of the riders who came out to support this important cause.

National Bike to Work Day - May 15, 2015

Bicycles East celebrated National Bike to Work Day by hosting an event to celebrate the day. Bicycle commuters met for breakfast, social time, and camaraderie. Several then joined a guide for an escorted ride into the Hartford state-wide event. This event was co-sponsored by Bike Walk Glastonbury. 

Bike to School Day - May 6, 2015

Bicycles East provided tech support and encouragement at Buttonball Elementary School's Bike to Work event. What a great way to celebrate National Bike to School Day! Great job Buttonball staff and students!

Glastonbury River Runners - American Liver Foundation Fundraiser - April 12, 2015

Deb and Steve served as the bicycle patrol along the course for the Glastonbury River Runners Travelers Insured Intl 5K race to raise money for the American Liver Foundation. Thanks to everyone who ran and everyone who volunteered.

Teaching Youth about Safe Cycling - April 2015

Steve spent 2 evenings this week volunteering to teach safe cylicng and performing bike and helmet inspections to two youth organizations - Navigators USA and Boy Scouts. 

State of CT Bicycle and Pedestrian Board Publishes Annual Report - March 10, 2015

The State of CT Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board submitted their Annual Report of recommendations, accomplishments, and other info to the Dept. of Transportation, Governor, and Legislature. Deb is a member of this Board. The report can be found at this link

Bicycle Donation for CT Children's Medical Center - March 6, 2015

We delivered several bikes to the Connecticut Children's Medical Center. These bikes will go to children living with cancer and other illnesses as part of CCMC's Cycle for Life program. These gently used bikes were donated or traded in by our clients and refurbished by our mechanics. It is a privilege to support these children and their caregivers.

Cub Scouts Pinewood Derby Sponsor - February 8, 2015

Bicycles East sponsored some Cub Scout packs for their annual pinewood derbies. In return, they made us this pinewood version of our Bicycles East van. It didn't win any races, but we like it!

Glastonbury Complete Streets Policy Adopted - Feb. 2, 2015


Thank you to our Town staff and officials for passing Glastonbury's Complete Streets Policy. This is a huge step in committing to our future of bike and pedestrian-friendly roads. As stated in the final document, "This Complete Streets policy will allow every transportation project to be viewed as an opportunity to improve safety,accessibility and mobility for all users."

Last night's meeting of Bike Walk Glastonbury was quite productive. We continued work on Glastonbury's Bicycle Friendly Community Application, finalized the updates to the Glastonbury Bicycle Master Plan, and discussed pedestrian safety issues.

Help a Chicken Cross the Road - Bicycles East Dresses Up for Crosswalk Safety Awareness - Nov. 9, 2014

Deb teamed up with the Glastonbury Town Center Initiative, and they devised a crosswalk safety program - Help a Chicken Cross the Road. Here's Deb in the chicken costume, with Rachel Blatt who did a tremendous amount of work to organize the program.

Glastonbury River Runners Race to Fill the Pantry - Nov. 9, 2014

Bicycles East is proud to sponsor the Glastonbury River Runners' Race to Fill the Pantry. They raised a lot of food for the local pantries. We served as the bike patrol to help keep the runners safe on the road. Thanks to Rick G. for helping us out.

Apple Harvest Festival Bicycle Scavenger Hunt Oct. 19, 2014

Bicycles East worked with the Town of Glastonbury Parks and Recreation Department, Bike Walk Glastonbury, and the Glastonbury Chamber of Commerce to offer the 1st annual Bicycle Scavenger Hunt. The event highlighted family friendly roads throughout town as kids and adults biked to "secret stops" and earned tickets for the prize drawing. Bicycles East donated a bike as the grand prize that was awarded at the Apple Harvest Festival to a very happy child. Here you can see a family locate the library stop and receive their tickets.

Bicycles East honored as Bicycle Friendly Business - Sep. 24, 2014

Bicycles East has been honored by the League of American Bicyclists as a silver level Bicycle Friendly Business. This honor is awarded to businesses that promote bicycling in their communities and support their employees and customers to bicycle to the business. The honor is not reserved for bicycle stores, but is open to any business. Bicycles East is the first business in Glastonbury to received this designation.

Kiwanis Club Tour of Glastonbury Sponsorhip and Tech Support - Sep. 7, 2014

Bike MS Tour - June 1, 2014

Steve provided tech support for yesterday's Bike MS fundraising ride, and Coach and Carin rode100 miles to support this important cause. Thanks to all the riders who raised funds to help defeat Multiple Sclerosis.

Trek Honors Bicycles East for Our Advocacy Work - May 22, 2014

Thank you to Trek for presenting us with this award in recognition of our work on behalf of bicycle advocacy. The plaque reads that we are "proud to recognize Bicycles East for their efforts in changing the world through cycling advocacy." Our Trek representative Dave Russell stopped by the store to present us with this award.

Bicycles East Hosts Bike to Work Day Event - May 16, 2014

Bicycles East joined with Bike Walk Glastonbury to celebrate Bike to Work Day with a meet up at the store for refreshments and camaraderie and led a group ride into Hartford for the statewide event.

Bicycles East Hosts League of American Bicyclists Visit - Nov. 20, 2014

Bicycles East hosted Bill Nesper, VP of Programs of the League of American Bicyclists, on a bike tour followed by a 2 hour educational session and discussion. Attendance included key Town staff and officials, advocacy representatives, community reps, and more. Our next step is to begin the application process to become a Bicycle Friendly Community!!!

Bicycles East Again Named One of America's Best Bicycle Shops - Aug. 24, 2014

Bicycles East is grateful and proud to announce that, once again, we have received the honor as one of America's Best Bike Shops for 2014, as recognized by the National Bicycle Dealer's Association. This honor is based on a comprehensive application process that includes a review of the knowledge and professionalism of our staff, our policies and procedures, our community involvement and advocacy efforts, and the results of a mystery shopper who rated our store on customer service, cleanliness, and other indicators. CCMC Bicycle Donations - Apr. 1, 2014

Here are some of the bikes that you shared for donation. We fixed them up and donated them to CCMC's Cycle of Life program for children who have lived with cancer. With gratitude to those who donated, and to those who cared for our special cousin and continue to care for other children.
